Dr Fiona Wood, aged 46, plastic surgeon, Yorkshire born mother of six, and Head of Royal Perth Hospital's Burns Unit was named Australian of the Year today (http://www.australianoftheyear.gov.au/bioFW-8678.asp). Fiona takes over the baton from retired Aussie Cricket captain Steve Waugh, passing from sport (31% of the 49 award winners since 1960) to medicine (17%) - see the full list and age and category distribution at http://www.findem.com.au/resources/displayResourcesArticle.php?id=15).
The long tradition of British/Australian sport origins remains a feature of this 217th Australia Day with Alicia Molik and Lleyton Hewitt playing finals matches at the Australian Open tennis(invented in England in 1874) and Australia playing the West Indies in cricket(invented in England in 1744).
