10 million comings and goings

The January 2005 overseas arrivals and departures were released this week by the ABS. They show movements in and out of the country totalling 879,000 (488,000 in and 391,000 out) for January, equivalent to an annual rate of 10.5 million total movements or 50% of the population. This figure is an increase of 12% on January 2004.

Counting of permanent stayers (i.e. net migration) cannot be done accurately with this level of total movement in and out of the country and deficiencies in the recording of who is a resident departure and who is a departing visitor. (See research paper on this in Resources at http://www.findem.com.au/resources/displayResourcesArticle.php?id=23).

Country of origin of the 10,890 recorded as permanent settler arrivals in January, was 19% from New Zealand, 17% UK, 7% India and 7% China.
