Ageing & Health Cost
This week the Productivity Commission released its final report on the looming cost of supporting an aged society in Australia. The biggest component is health costs which (in 2003-03 dollars) rise from $1,664pa per person in the 35-54 age group to $6,719pa in the 75-84 age group. By 2044-45 the population in the 75-84 age group will be 190% higher than in 2000-01. The report and lots of interesting tables (including full spreadsheets of population projections) can be downloaded for the web site http://www.pc.gov.au/ . If you have Adobe SVG viewer loaded you can also see some great graphic ageing representations as populations pyramids from 1971 to 2050 on the ABS web site http://www.abs.gov.au/websitedbs/d3310114.nsf/home/population%20pyramid%20preview
