Property 60 % of Assets
This month the Reserve Bank released a research paper titled Property Owners in Australia: A Snapshot. For Household asset accumulation there has been increased focus on superannuation in the past 20 years. However residential property still represents the major portion of household assets at 60% and 70% of households own or are buying their own home. Investment properties are held by 17% of households.
The percent of households who are homeowners varies from 27% in the 15 to 24 age group to 83% in the 65 to 74 age group. The investment property ownership varies from 8% in the 15 to 24 age group to 24% in that a 55 to 64 age group. Graphs of these age profiles have been added to Miscellaneous Charts in the Research Centre.
