Fathers Day for Steve Waugh

This Sunday is father?s day in Australia. The Australian Fathers Day Council has named retired Australian cricketer Steve Waugh as Father of The Year. Waugh, who was also Australian of the Year in 2004, says this year will be the first father?s day he has spent at home with his three children. Previous cricket captain Mark Taylor was father of the year in 1995. Cricket captains, who spend more than half of the year away from family home, often with wives managing kids in the terrible two's, seems an odd pick for Father of the Year. It is to be hoped the fall from grace of 2002 Father of the year Steve Vizard does no inflict our current hero Steve. See http://www.fatheroftheyear.com.au/ for full history of Fathers of the year.

Fathers day has both biblical origin linked to Joseph, father of Christ (St Joseph's Day 18 March) and also a US origin of the third Sunday in June, which is the common date celebrated in countries like USA, Japan, Hong Kong, UK, France, India. The origin of fathers day as first Sunday in September in Australian and New Zealand is unclear.

FinDem's latest projections estimate there are 12.7 million Australians (63% of the population) with fathers living. Average age of the children is 23.7 and average age of the living fathers is 51.4.
