Nuclear Families in minority
Longer lifetimes and individual lifestyle choices of young adults mean that the classic nuclear family household is set for a minor representation in households of the 2020's. These trends are the focus of an article by demographer Bernard Salt in today's Australian. In the 1960's Salt estimates nuclear families (Mum, Dad and the kids) made up 50% of households.
By 2031 Salt estimates nuclear families will represent just 24% of households and they will be overshadowed by single person households, most of them aged baby boomers whose partners have died. This will bring more demand for social and religious clubs to stem the isolation in the suburbs and reworking of sporting fields into parks and gardens.
Salt predicts that the residential property market has just one, or at most two, booms left before demand for family homes hits the wall during the 2020's. One balancing factor which could save the day (as it has done through Australia?s history) is migration.
