Cynthia Lennon - Mother & Son

A rare demographic time capsule has been created with Cynthia Lennon?s book titled ?John? ISBN 0-340-89511-X. Whilst the title refers to Cynthia?s first husband, Beatle John Lennon and father of her son Julian, this is really an imitate sharing of how Cynthia coped with a drug addicted husband, divorce, financial insecurity and subsequent relationships and her strong commitment to care for her son Julian and her mother. It has resonance with the 7-Up series as John?s childhood after age 5 was spent without mother and father. This plus the lack of recognition and encouragement and mean spirited behaviour of his guardian aunt, appears to have dogged John through most of his life in coping with family relationships.

The reason why FinDem is so taken with this book is in seeing it as a longitudinal study of a cohort indelibly linked to and well known by the baby boomers, but born 10 years before the first of them, and also 10 years ahead of their path through divorce, custody battles, financial worries and relationships. John Lennon would have been 65 tomorrow and Cynthia turned 65 last year. Baby boomers have between 6 and 24 years before they turn 65. The book is worth a read to reflect on how their lives may have been ?what happened while they were busy making other plans?, and to ponder how to navigate the ?long and winding road? ahead for them and their children.
