Workplace Romances

UK Psychologist Chantal Gautier, presents some new research this weekend at a conference in Glasgow with her paper 'The myths and realities surrounding workplace romances: a qualitative investigation'. Her study supports the revision of industry bans on workplace relationships. The study, carried out at the University of Westminster, shows that the lack of tolerance for workplace romances can leave individuals feeling depressed if the relationship breaks down. Gautier investigated the experiences of people from a range of working environments including financial services and hospitality.

The counter view to workplace romance is that when such relationships end, workplace productivity can break down. Many US employment contracts have termination conditions if office romances occur. It will be interesting to see what emerges in the brave new world of Australian workplace contracts. No mention is made of workplace romance protection in the conditions protected by the new law which are as follows :

* Minimum and award classification wages.

* Annual leave.

* Personal/carer?s leave (including sick leave).

* Parental leave (including maternity leave).

* Maximum ordinary hours of work.

* Protection against unlawful termination.

* Specified award conditions like penalty rates,

* overtime and long service leave.

* The right to join and be represented by a union.

* The right to have a bargaining agent.

* The right to lawful industrial action when negotiating an agreement.
