Howard PM Expectancies
John Howard will celebrates 10 years as Prime Minister of Australia on 11 March 2006. He is aged 66 and based on the latest life tables a man of this age has a life expectancy of 16.9 years (if we allow for mortality improvement to continue on current trends this becomes 29.5 years). Using FinDem Lifetime Calculators in Research Centre we have made similar calculations for the last 9 prime ministers back to Menzies at the end of their terms and based on the then latest mortality tables. Average life expectancies at the end of their terms was 16.4 years and was highest for Keating at 26.7 years (he was 52) and lowest for Menzies at 8.6 years (he was 72).
If John Howard plans to match Menzies in life expectancy-remaining at 8.6 years, he will be declaring his innings at age 79 in 2019. All PM?s (except for Harold Holt who ended his term lost at sea) outlived their life expectancy at end-of-term ? John Gorton did best living 31 years compared to his 15 years life expectancy when his term ended in 1971.
