Knowing When to Leave 2
Little did we know when we posted our FinDem News article on 20 May "Knowing When to Leave" about John Howard's opportunity to retire in style, would there be the fracas of the past week of the Costello ultimatum. So how does Peter Costello stack up demographically? He is 48 and a tail-end baby boomer.
In recent years only Keating (age 47) and Fraser (age 45) were younger on becoming prime minister. Before that we have to go back to Menzies in 1949 to find a younger PM at 45, although 45 in 1949 is really like 54 now based on the same life expectancy and allowing for mortality improvement. Howard was 57 when he became PM. So is Peter a little impatient - Probably. But it's a taste of what's to come in the workforce with Generation X chasing after the baby boomers jobs.
