7 Times 7 Up
The 7th in the series of Michael Apted's '7 Up' opens in Australia on 3rd August. This is a cinematic longitudinal study of 14 English children from when they were 7 and is repeated every 7 years. It started in 1956 (when TV came to Australia) and originally was intended to track children from different 'classes'. The class system in England has faded in importance with the 14 experiencing the great class levelers of divorce, migration, grief and depression. The interest of the series is more about how they cope with these life experiences and their response to the request for reappearance in front of Apted's lens every 7 years.
At 49 it is interesting that none have died. The probability based on Australian mortality, of a group of 14 boys and girls at 7 in 1956 plus director Michael Apted then aged 22, still being alive today is 29%.
