5 Million Mothers
Mothers Day will be celebrated on Sunday 13th May 2007 in Australia. Based on kinship research conducted by FinDem last year we estimate there are 5.1 million living mothers in Australia with 15 million children. The average age of the mothers is 52 and average age of children with mothers living is 28.
Longer lifetimes have done a lot for Mothers Day. From 1970 to now and allowing for projected mortality improvement, the average probability of women living 25 years from age 50 has increased from 65% to 96%. In 1970 there were only 2.8 million mothers with average age 47.
Mothers Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May in most countries expect for UK, Ireland and Nigeria where it is on the fourth Sunday in Lent.
