Grandparent Leave for Saints
Australian bank St George, has just introduced 12 months unpaid leave for staff to help care for their grandchildren. The leave can be taken flexibly - some days fo the week, months on or off etc. The bank said that they are providing these flexibilities so that mature age workers with great knowledge will stay with the organisation longer.
A mojor study of the demographic profile of Australian grandparents and grandchildren was conducted in 2006 by Sydney actuary Bruce Gregor. The data can be downloaded at http://www.findem.com.au/resources/displayResourcesArticle.php?id=109 It shows that the percentage of the population who are grandparents is 10% at age 40, 22% at age 50, 54% at age 60 and 66% at age 65.
