Stockmarket hits $1.5 trllion
The Australian stockmarket finished May 2007 up 27.5% for the past 12 months (and that's just the price index before accounting for dividends). On FinDem's calculation, all the shares on the ASX are worth $1.5 trillion after only having reached $1.0 trillion less than two years ago.
The market has increased at high teens or above 20% in each of the last 4 years to give an average increase over 4 years to May 2007 of 21.4%. Ignoring overlapping years, this 4 year average has only been bettered once before in the 132 years of FinDem's stock index series. This was in the 4 years to May 1987 when the market index averaged 31.5%pa. The market index was negative in each of the following 4 years.
