2006 Census Released
The first results from the Australian 2006 Census of Population and Housing were released today by the ABS. At a first glance the key changes over 10 years have been more people in the process of purchasing a home (up from 25% to 32%), median population age up from 34 to 37 and the proportion of population aged 65 and over increased from 12.1% to 13.3%.
Whilst the majority of people still speak only English at home, it reduced form 82% to 78% over the 10 years. In the area of most common language spoken at home other than English, biggest increase was Mandarin which went from 0.5% to 1.1% and closing in on traditional migrant sources of Greek(1.3%) and Italian(1.6%).
