Gen X & Y Come Alive

After two decades of Generation X and Y lying low in the political landscape, they're back in the front line. The Live Earth concerts on 070707 saw massive crowds of a broad cross-section of X & Y's dance to the beat of environment and social proclaimers from Crowded House (icons of 1986-1996 for early X'ers) to Wolfmother (aria winners for late Y's). It's not the violent activism of World Trade conferences or Vietnam - it's a more considered and confident mood espousing willingness to live a less affluent lifestyle.

There will be 3.3 million Generation X & Y's voting in the forthcoming federal election who did not vote in the current government in 1996 (see our Miscellaneous Charts in Research Centre). They have become used to the economic good times as the norm (just like the baby boomers in the late 1960's) and may be immune to risk in change of government. A new movement called Getup! http://www.getup.org.au/ is another indicator of activism by X & Y's. Although stated to not be politically aligned, it looks like being a player in the federal election, particularly with funding of the London Bombing victim Louise Barry's Utube add on TV pleading for withdrawal from Iraq.
